The Kingsford Smith Cup – When the Brisbane Winter Carnival Heats Up
The Kingsford Smith Cup is a Group 1 race run under Weight For Age conditions over 1300m at Eagle Farm racecourse as part of the Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival. The race was upgraded to a Group 1 race in 2006 and this upgrade has led to an influx of quality interstate and international runners competing each year.
The 2022 Kingsford Smith Cup will be run on Saturday 28th May with total prize money of $700,000.
Kingsford Smith Cup Form Guide
Two Sydney Group 1 races, the TJ Smith Stakes and All Aged Stakes were the best form references for the Kingsford Smith Cup in its early years as a Group 1. However, in recent years the Doomben 10000 has superseded those races as the key lead in race. The last three winners, IMPENDING, THE BOSTONIAN, and VEGA ONE have all come out of the 1200m Group 1 race at Doomben.
11 of the past 14 winners have placed in their last lead-up race and mares have struggled with only two victorious, including the incomparable BLACK CAVIAR. Put simply, male horses who are in form and race fit run well in the Kingsford Smith Cup.
Favourite Backers Beware!
Favourites have a poor record in this race since it was upgraded to a Group 1, with just two salutings. When you consider that the two favourites were superstars BLACK CAVIAR ($1.14F in 2012) and APACHE CAT ($1.30 in 2008) it is easy to see why it is a good idea to go wide when doing the form! HOT SNITZEL became the longest-priced winner when he won in 2015 at odds of $26. Last year’s favourite SAVITIANO finished 9th.
2022 Kingsford Smith Cup Betting Tips
The 2022 Kingsford Smith Cup looks like an open race as always and based on previous results punters should be looking for a male horse who has placed at his start. A last start in the Doomben 10000 would be preferable.
The Godolphin-trained PAULELE was narrowly beaten into 2nd in the Doomben 10000 and is the only place getter from that race heading into the Kingsford Smith Cup. As a 3yo he will get weight relief from his older rivals and the stable enjoyed success with IMPENDING back in 2018. He looks capable of striking a blow for favourite backers. His stablemate, the veteran KEMENTARI has found a second lease on life in recent weeks and looks like an Each-Way chance at nice odds.
